Joel Loo
Joel Loo is the Founder and CEO of CommonTown. Mr. Loo brings with him 13 years of experience in research & development and his expertise lies in strategizing of innovative Internet solutions. Mr. Loo was a pioneer in Multimedia technologies at Institute of Systems Science (ISS) in 1986 where he developed one of the first multimedia system in collaboration with JTC. In 1989, he worked in Microelectronics and Computer Corporation (MCC), Austin, Texas. Areas of work include pioneering groupware research and issue-based information system. When he returned to Singapore in 1991, he continued with ISS and managed several R&D projects in areas such as advanced programming languages and courseware. In 1995, he spearheaded ISS’s partnership with Times Publishing Group and led a team to produce a series of ground-breaking courseware titles which ultimately won them the prestigious Singapore Designers’ Award (Merit) in 1996.
Mr. Loo started and championed the CommonTown project and became the spin-off company's CTO in 2000. He took over as CEO in 2001 and turned it into a profit-making company in a short time. Continuing his unwavering belief in technological innovation he led CommonTown to create new innovative products such as the Swiiit web-builder and Movalin interactive movie creator on the iPhone.
Mr. Loo graduated from National University of Singapore with a B.Sc. in Computer Science in 1986. He has a Licentiate Diploma (Classical Singing) with London College of Music.
